The “online” button
Where did the “online” button go?
- “Online” statuses on social media are not as common
- Rise of async social media (almost content-catalogue like)
- Instead, online green dots.
Three kinds of online status documentation:
- You'll see a green dot or a timestamp next to the profile picture of people you follow or have direct conversations with.
- In your direct inbox, you'll see their most recent Activity status (example: Active 25m ago, Active yesterday, Seen, Typing...).
- When you open a chat, you'll also be able to see activity (example: In the chat, In the camera).
How status updates work on Instagram:
- Background Activity: Instagram may continue to run in the background on your device, updating your activity status even when you are not actively using the app.
- Push notifications: If you have push notifications enabled for Instagram, the app may update your activity status when a notification is received.
- Third-party apps: Some third-party apps that are connected to your Instagram account can update your activity status, even if you are not actively using the app.
- Technical issues: There may be a temporary technical issue with Instagram's servers that is causing your activity status to be incorrect.
